Range and Power

Range and power usually go together, the greater your range the greater your vocal power needs to be in order to sustain it effectively.

What Exactly Is Your Vocal Range?

Increasing the vocal range is one of the things that allows a singer to be versatile. The greater your range the more songs you can fit in your repertoire. Your vocal range is the ability to sing either high or low notes comfortably. Usually your range is measured in octaves, an octave being eight notes. Starting at middle C up to the next C is one octave. If you can sing all of the notes one octave below middle C, and one octave above middle C, then your have a two octave range. This is where most people feel comfortable singing, some may extend further either direction adding more octaves. The greater your range the more versatile your repertoire can be, which can often be important if singing in a cover band. While more is usually better many artists with one octave ranges have been successful, such as Johnny Mathis or Leonard Cohen.

What Constitutes Is A Powerful Singing Voice?

When it comes to power, there are some who have naturally powerful voices, but most professional singers have to work at it. It has a lot to do with breath and diaphragm control, but not necessarily anything to do with how loud you can shout. It’s a joy to watch a powerful singer controlling their voice, being aware that there lies just below the surface a powerhouse ready to be unleashed when the time is right, and a sense that there is always more if required. You might not think you have to worry about such things yet as you just want to get singing, but now is the right time to start your voice on the correct path to power. There are various schools of thought on what constitutes a powerful singing voice and a varying number of experts will tell you different techniques for extending your range. But most will agree that the power of the voice comes from the airstream that is pushed upward form the lungs. This coupled with a good tone quality and a well controlled pitch make for a clean smooth power filled sound. The positioning of the jaw the lips and the tongue also contribute to the overall end result and most of these things need to be recognized and controlled. This is why coaching in the correct techniques is important.
